Bakers V Fakers The Food Network
I’m no Lorraine Pascal,
or a baker for that matter, but you always want to learn new tips!
That’s why when the Food Network UK reached out and asked if we wanted to take part in their Bakers v Fakers.
myself and KK jumped at the chance.
we were excited to learn how to make a fake cake!
Metaphorically speaking my kitchen is so small that there is no room to swing a cat! So,
KK doesn’t get the chance of learning cooking skills with me.
I thought it’d be a lovely time out; boy was I right!
The team were fantastic! Warm and very welcoming; it was lovely to not only meet Juliet Sear but to follow her in the class making the ice
At first glance, I was amazed at how much skill went into making this fantastic cake.
I assumed we would need a lot longer than the time slot given to us.
Well… out came the shop-bought items ha! Genuinely genius;
got to love a shortcut!
Bakers V Fakers truly was a masterclass in how to make a fake cake!
Juliet showed us in a demonstration on how to make the two sets of cakes into one.
It was a relatively easy job –
stick one on top of the other but base up top for a flat edge.
To hold, use icing and seal around.
Using the knife was very awkward! and not having a turntable made it harder to get a more precise finish,
but we made the best of what we had available to us.
KK was a little frustrated after she put her cake in the fridge to set.
we were getting our ice cream cone ready and the crispy rice squares were very sticky. hehe,
and I think by this point KK was wanting to demolish everything.
The tips for the squares were simple to do. still needed to make tighter as when putting it in the chocolate melt it fell into the bowl – oops!
So glad we weren’t the only ones to do this.
Then we had the job of placing on the top of the cone and putting in the fridge to set.
Our cake was ready to have the drip effect put on; Juliet made it look so easy to do. But our ice dream cake was looking amateur.
Juliet said that the room temperature was having an impact on the chocolate melts
And this is one reason it came out too thick and that I should have cut the nozzle hole smaller. this would have given me more control. We live and learn.
To see all the other cakes decorated and set up made me feel like anything was possible.
